ESD and metal-free describe different characteristics of safety footwear. Use this guide to narrow your uvex shortlist, then confirm the exact product specification against your workplace requirements.
What does ESD mean?
ESD refers to electrostatic discharge. Selected uvex footwear is specified to help control static discharge; the limits and details are stated for the individual article. ESD suitability must be assessed as part of the workplace's complete system, including the floor and other equipment.
What does metal-free mean?
Metal-free describes construction. Uvex xenova toe caps use a composite material rather than steel; some articles also have a non-metallic penetration-resistant midsole. Check whether the specification describes individual components or the complete footwear.
One feature does not prove the other
A metal-free shoe is not automatically ESD-rated. Likewise, ESD marking does not establish that a shoe contains no metal. Compare both characteristics where your workplace requires them.
Check before you buy
- Read the selected model's ESD information.
- Confirm the safety rating and any midsole protection required.
- Check the manufacturer's approved insole and care instructions.
- Confirm suitability with the person responsible for your workplace footwear specification.
Can I use any replacement insole?
Use an insole approved for the particular shoe. Changing components may affect fit and the footwear's tested performance.
